One would think that a family who lives at the beach wouldn’t really need to go on a beach vacation. Because, well, isn’t that what our life is every day?
Believe it or not, there is a difference between living AT the beach and vacationing at the beach. Though we hit the sand and waves a couple times each week at home, we still have to, you know, go home afterward. Drive the ten minutes inland. Do laundry. Fix dinner. Clean bathrooms. Vacuum under the kitchen table. Pay bills. Follow through with commitments. All that normal stuff. We still have to LIVE… just near the beach.
I know. What a shocker.
Then there’s a beach vacation. The kind where your friend calls you up and says, “Hey, wanna hit up the beach house for a week? You know, the one that’s right ON the beach. The one from which you can walk out, move your feet twenty-five times and be on the sand?”
And you say, “Um…. yes. As a matter of fact.”
So you go pack up a few changes of clothes just in case you actually wear something other than your swimsuit, drive up the freeway to a different beach than your normal one, and you’re officially on the vaca.
(Forgot to mention: you must also grab all blankies, stuffed animals, bibs, bedding, and other paraphernalia necessary for your two little people to be away from home for a week, wrap up any pending business at home, figure out what days, if any, your hard working husband can get off work early to join you at said beach and THEN you can load up the truck and head up the freeway. Just sayin. Being real and all that.)
We’re at the beach this week. Did I mention that yet?
It’s a funny thing–I haven’t spent this much time at the beach in one summer since I was wearing diapers. As I said before, I’ve lived in the desert most of my life since those diaper wearing years and might grab two trips to the coast each summer. That said, I’m begging you to forgive my raving and gushing and going on and on and on and ON about the whole schebang. I’m just a little in love.
This morning I got up before it was light outside, grabbed my Bible/journal/book/devos necessities, answered a text message from my sweet guy who was doing the same thing at the same time back at home, and headed out to the patio. Truly, there isn’t much that compares to time spent with the powerful God who controls the seas while being lulled by the breaking, swirling waves of those very waters. The sun slowly made it’s ascent behind the morning mist, giving me almost two full hours before I heard little voices and pattering footsteps through the open window.
Yesterday as I sat in church with Bethany–my forever sister friend–and belted the words of In Christ Alone with a group of believers I’d never met but who clearly adore my same King. I sang… No guilt in life, no fear in death–this is the power of Christ in me… From life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny… and was overwhelmed with the greatness of this God, this Savior. All that He is, all that He does. There’s no large or small with Him–He’s complete and fully in both extremes. My time with Him this morning only intensified the solidity of the emotion. Funny how God can do such a thing… take something as abstract as feeling and turn it concrete. His very being is just too much for me… words fail me. And you know it’s not often that happens. Ha.
Bethany and I are off for a run on the boardwalk as soon as the boys are done with breakfast. I’ll be packing them in the double jogger and trying not to knock over any innocent strolling folks with the big ol’ steam engine it is. I’m thinking that might ruin the whole “perfect beach trip” experience for all parties involved, wouldn’t you agree?
Of course, the old surfer dude who lives behind this house just came out and told Bethany and I we should just get some lined paper instead of having our laptops out here on the patio–that we’d enjoy the morning better. I’m guessing he thinks we’ve already pretty much committed sacrilege, so anything goes from here on out.
As long as it doesn’t include cleaning, major cooking, or bills. That WOULD be ruination itself.
So. ANYWAY. The point of this here post. Believe me, there was one when I started typing.
I’ve been pretty much talking about the beach and summerish things and vacations and blah-ti-blah-ti-blah for, oh, I dunno… three months now. So let’s talk about something else.
Tell me what YOU have done this summer–vacations and/or how you’ve typically passed these warm weather days.
Because I’m curious… what exactly do people DO when they aren’t getting sandy toes most days of the week? This desert girl has left the land of her heritage… and can’t remember. More sacrilege. I’m all about it today, aren’t I?

I moved to the beach earlier this summer so, like you, I've spent more than my fair share there too :) But besides that, I've learned to sew, have become ever so slightly more advanced in photography and um. . . cooked, and cleaned, and grocery shopped, and paid bills, and done laundry, and started reading again (as well as reading my first Beth Moore book– Jesus: 90 Days With the One and Only). Fun summer so far!

Let's see….so far, I've homeschooled all 4 of the kiddos, did laundry, did dishes, was a guest at a tea party thrown by my daughter (think homemade petit fours and cream cheese and cucumber pinwheels). She made everything and decorated everything for it! We then sunk into a LONG game of Life, which my 5 year old daughter beat me at by a mere $5000. I'm now quietly enjoying your stories, and watching my precious 4 fold, hang, and put away their clothes. Aha! Duty calls. I'm being summoned by my little man to come play trains with him and his wonderful new track that he built! :)

I love your beachy vacation post! :)
It's been a few years since I've been to the ocean; even though it's only about 3.5 hours away… just over those hills and mountains to the west ;)
There truly is NOTHING more peaceful than basking in the Lord' presence by the ocean, hearing the waves lap the shore. It's a beautiful thing.
We've managed to get to the lake with our little ski boat a few times and that's been fun. You know, tubing, wakeboarding, swimming, eating, relaxing and just taking the day off. It's good fun. :)
Other than that, we haven't done a lot of summer vacation type of stuff. Just worked around our place, tried to keep the house in good shape, gardened, gardened, gardened, took care of little calf, watched chickies hatching out, and enjoyed life in general.
Now, it's almost time to start school again. Whew! Time flies!

Ya know what else is great? Living at the beach and then spending $800in plane fare and $600 in car rental fees to fly 4 people – 2 bigs and 2 littles – to the other side of the country and then drive 6 more hours to get to the house where you'll spend a week with 18 other beloved family members (seriously!) on a beach where you can watch the sun rise over the ocean instead of set over it! The irony was not lost on me that as a beach dweller I had to move heaven and earth to spend a week at the beach, but it was way worth every penny!

You mean besides the whole, you know, MOVE?
Um, hiking, hiking, more hiking. Swimming at various lakes (which does include sandy toes and such ;). Trips to the park, walks on the beach (too cold and rocky up here to swim). More sand there. And seashells. Lots of seashells. :) I'm gonna send you some.
Missing you muchly. Wishing you were here.

I love it when you can meet with fellow Believers and share that intimate bond that comes with knowing the Savior. It's a beautiful thing!
I'll try not to be envious of your beach life. We here in Oklahoma have miles upon miles of…man made lake shoreline…and lemme tell you – it's no West Coast! :) Seeing how it's been 100+ degrees and humid for months, we mostly just lay low until the weather gets a little nicer. I did make a trip out to The Desert, New Mexico to visit a friend, but this year – what with the new addition and all – we've mostly just stayed close to home. Hoping for a mini-family vacation come October. Maybe to the river, camping, canoeing, trout fishing…maybe- we'll see. :)

It's funny that you blogged about being on the beach watching the sun come up and basically finding yourself even closer to God as you did your devotional. I had to fill in for Sunday School and had NO idea what to teach. We went outside because it was a cool and BREEZY sort of day, and we had a lesson on being still and knowing He is God, how being in His creation gives us such peace, and how seeing the miracle of His creation is proof of His existance.
So many people go outside to "commune with nature". What they don't understand is that they are "communing" with God's awesomeness in creation!!!

I started the summer marrying my BESTEST friend! And after a wonderful honeymoon (getting pregnant and then miscarrying 6 weeks later)we had 3 lovely weeks getting used to being married (and being in the earliest stages of being pregnant) before we started a long run of booksignings (my husband is an author (Swords of the Six) here on the east coast, in various parts of New England. We had a week and a half break toward the beginning of August in which my Mom's Sister, her son, and her Brother, and his oldest son came from CA for 2 weeks. We had lots of fun, boating, and having lots of family get-togethers. I have enjoyed going to the beach a couple times although not nearly as often as I would have liked, although it's still warm out, so maybe I can make it a couple more times with my Hubby or with my Sisters(YES! I LOVE the beach too! and there is nothing in the world like it! When I look at the vast expanse of water, that I know goes even further than my eye can see, I just stand in awe, at how big my God must be! :) It's always amazing to me also to think that He can count the grains of sand as well. Our God is certainly an awesome God!). And now we are fully back into multiple booksignings every week for the next 3 months before leaving for a 7-12 month (approximately) long book tour across the nation.
I hope you enjoy the rest of your lovely vacation. :)

Lets see. Mtns and beaches get my first vote for a perfect vacation. Fortunately for me, I got to do both this summer :D

Hey Ashleigh,
I can't say that I *remember* exactly what there is to do when you don't live by the beach.
Our family has only been in Hawaii (for work) about 10 months, and we've been converted out of the Vacation Beach mode. Any of the visitors that we get from the 'mainland' can't fathom how we still live and that the kids still go to school!
I'm glad that you're enjoying your vacation, and that you helped our generation out a little bit by taking your laptop outside and watched the waves writing on it instead of lined paper. :-)
My family still struggles to be ok with me doing it!
Have fun on the jog.
Terrific post!!
