I used to think toddler beds were silly. I mean, why not just put a side rail on a regular twin bed and save yourself the trouble of having to buy two beds?
Then we moved into a two-bedroom house with a small second bedroom. We have two boys who need to sleep in there. A toddler bed it is.
Such realizations regarding my pre-children notions are quickly becoming a frequent occurence around here.
On Sunday night, my mother-in-love and I spent ten hours a while putting together Troy’s “big boy bed.” After multiple attempts and having to take it apart again a time or two (how hard can it BE?? Ridiculously hard, obviously.) we had on our hands a little boy quite eager to hop into bed. He would have slept in his clothes if we’d let him.
Oh, the anticipation!
Oh, the EXCITEMENT!
Of course he had to wear his “Cars” jammies to match his “Cars bed.”
He quickly hopped into bed, we prayed, turned on his music, and kissed him goodnight.
John’s mom and I went downstairs with Merritt and waited, expecting to see a little blonde head peeking out from around the staircase at any moment.
Apparently the Big Boy Bed held more fascination than the possibility of freedom, because the little blonde head never appeared.
I did, however, go in to check on him later, discovering a whole new assortment of stuffed animals on his bed, different from those that had surrounded him when I tucked him in.
Now how exactly did THAT happen, li’l boy? I suppose they all sprouted legs and decided the Cars bed looked pretty comfy, too?
But, all in all, the first night was a complete success.
We all slept soundly and Troy woke up a chipper little fella bright and early the next morning.
The SECOND night, on the other hand…
Let’s just say I had another realization about this parenthood thing.
The novelty of such things as new beds wears off. Quickly.
Here’s hoping for at least a couple hours of sleep tonight. And some sleep for my mother-in-love while she’s flying home today. After last night, we’re both going to need it.
He’s so precious :) Yeah…the novelty wears off quick to be sure. Our problem was eventually solved not only by consistency but by the two girls deciding they’d rather sleep TOGETHER. :) Wish that would be workable for you! It took probably two weeks of consistent and determined correction before Grace even began to get the message…here’s hoping it happens sooner for you!

Welcome home! I wanted to ask you… please oh please share your toddler bed saga with me as it progresses! We are having major issues with ours and I’m actually about to go buy another crib for Austin and just leave Jake in his crib for a while longer. Seriously, like with my next paycheck that is exactly what I’ve been planning to do! P.S. Happy 8-month birthday to Merritt!! (Right? Wasn’t he born the day before Austin? yall have the same big boy beds that we have. They are great, I know several people who’s kids are already in double beds. I like the small size (and the small price tag) of the toddler beds.

Your comment about all the additional animals in bed with Troy reminded me of the time I went in at nap time to check the kids. Both were sleeping, but Kevin in his crib was buried beneath stuffed animals. Guess who was sleeping in the twin bed in the same room. ;)

(you don’t have to post this-it’s long) :) Oh….the whole stay in your bed routine…*sigh*, ya know, with the girls, I was really consistant, because they “got it”…and so I would just correct and correct and correct until they stayed in the bed-which took like a week or two. Ayden *likes* to sleep, but *needs* some wind down time after our bedtime routine. So, we keep Lily in our room (until he falls asleep), we shut his door and latch it so he can’t get it open…(now, we don’t even have to do that). He usually will mill around for about 20 min-most times alot less, and then crawl into the toddler bed and fall asleep-he used to cry at the door for the 20 min, but realized eventually that we would not get him out or talk to him…so then he would just play with a toy or two and fall asleep on the floor-now, he doesn’t waste much time, he just pretty much gets a book or toy for company and goes to sleep in his bed. This was one battle we didn’t choose to take on in the same way we did the girls…they never would have gone to bed on their own! I realize this is not the usual, but for many reasons we decided this would work for us. Hope you find what works best for you! :)
